Via its nanoBasque strategy, the Basque Country is working on industrial diversification to come up with products with greater added value by incorporating micro and nano-technologies in practically all industrial sectors of the Basque Country.
The Basque paper sector, responsible for 1500 tonnes of paste and paper, over 1500 jobs and a turnover of 750 million Euros in the last year, is consequently aware of the possibilities offered by this technology and has set up an initiative known as Pulper Ideiak led by the Basque Country Paper Cluster, working with other agents in the region. Its main goal is to search for diversification areas for the Basque paper sector based on micro/nano/biotechnologies.
This session will discuss the different possibilities offered by a material such as nanocellulose and present the most promising applications currently being worked on.

The increasingly extensive use of nanomaterials in different products and industrial sectors creates the need to handle and process them correctly and safely, avoiding possible health and environmental risks.
Aware of international work to define a regulatory framework for the use of nanomaterials, as well as continuous scientific developments in terms of toxicology and safety and industry’s current difficulty to specifically monitor them, the Basque Government aims to line up knowledge and infrastructures for technological scientific agents who are working in this field and offer support to the industry through the Nanoscience and Nanotechnology initiative on the Environment, Health and Safety EHS-Advance.
The aims of this session are as follows:
- Present the Basque EHS Advance initiative.
- Discuss progress on developing the standard at a European level
- Disseminate the Basque Country’s capabilities in terms of nano-safety and guides developed by the EHS-Advance initiative

The third session of the Industrial Forum, organized by Phantoms Foundation will affect the transfer of nanotechnology in various industrial sectors. It will involve different speakers from countries where the transfer of nanotechnology is considered a success as Israel or Ireland.

Nanomedicine, as an application of nanotechnology developing new diagnosis and therapy systems as well as improving existing systems, has been highlighted as a priority for the strategic agendas of both OECD countries and emerging countries. Its implantation focuses on improving service quality for patients, working towards more personalised healthcare technology, with affordable cost levels, offering competitive products with high added value.

Nanomedicine offers a vast number of potential applications and others that are already on the market. Some of the most promising are controlled and guided release of drugs, tissue engineering, image diagnosis and early detection of pathologies.
Aware of this great opportunity, the Basque Country has been developing research in this field over the last few years, bringing new developments to the market that will be presented in this session.
